The damage will spread more widely the longer it stays. Mold will start to grow, the ceiling will get discoloured, and bulges will start to appear. As a result, the damage will extend to the walls, which will then start to discolour and grow mold until eventually the entire structure will be damaged beyond repair and will need to be replaced.
