What are the different sections on the SAT exam?

The SAT exam consists of four main sections designed to assess a student’s skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. These sections are structured to evaluate your readiness for college-level work. Here’s an overview of each section:

1. Reading Section (65 minutes)

  • Number of Questions: 52

  • Focus: This section tests your ability to understand and analyze written passages. You will encounter texts from literature, history, social studies, and science, followed by multiple-choice questions. The questions focus on reading comprehension, including identifying main ideas, making inferences, and analyzing the author’s tone and perspective.

  • Skills Tested: Critical reading, evidence-based reasoning, and the ability to interpret and analyze text.

2. Writing and Language Section (35 minutes)

  • Number of Questions: 44

  • Focus: This section evaluates your understanding of grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and overall writing style. You will be given passages with errors, and your task is to select the correct way to revise or edit them.

  • Skills Tested: Grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, clarity, and coherence.

3. Math Section (80 minutes total)

  • Divided into two parts:

    • Math Test – No Calculator (25 minutes):

      • Number of Questions: 20

      • Focuses on algebra, data analysis, and problem-solving. You are not allowed to use a calculator for these questions.

    • Math Test – Calculator (55 minutes):

      • Number of Questions: 38

      • Covers more complex topics such as advanced algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, with the option to use a calculator.

4. Essay Section (Optional, 50 minutes)
