What’s the difference between a service body and a utility body?

Great question — these two terms get mixed up constantly, even by people in the industry.

The core difference comes down to what happens in the center of the bed.

A service body keeps that center area open, just like a regular pickup bed. You get lockable side compartments on both sides for organized tool and parts storage, but the middle is exposed to the elements. It’s lighter, more affordable, and works perfectly for most tradespeople — electricians, plumbers, HVAC techs, and general contractors.

A utility body fully encloses that center section, turning it into something closer to the inside of a cargo van. Everything is protected from weather and theft — ideal if you’re hauling ladders, conduit, water heaters, A/C units, or anything long and bulky that won’t fit in a side compartment.

The honest way to decide:

Ask yourself two questions —

  • Do I carry large or long items that need protection from weather or theft?
  • Do I work in a high-theft area?

If yes to either → go with the utility body.

If no to both → a service body will do the job and save you money upfront.

One thing people overlook: utility bodies cost more and tend to be heavier, which can affect payload capacity on lighter chassis. If you’re running a ¾-ton truck, factor that in when specing.
